At 3200, the D700 pretty much was identical to the Canon 5D. At 6400 it was quite good as well. After that the only use would be in B&W, though at 25,000 the noise looks a bit like Tri-X pushed to 800. My only qualm so far is 1) It was very difficult to adjust the colors - the provided RAW converter was abysmal to say the least and the D700 is yet to be supported by ACR.

The D700 was a lot heavier than I expected. I wanted something around 5D weight. The d700 however felt and weighed as much as my 1DSMrkIII in my hand (note that the Nikon 24-70 weighs less than the Canon version and is smaller physically as well). The weight really bothered me as it isn’t as well distributed as on the 1DS or the 5D. Please note that I was shooting without a Vertical Grip.

As far as image quality, it’s excellent so far. The new 24-70 that Nikon released is amazing!

The NPS rep came by to talk to me. Now, as many of you folks may know, I’m a Canon digital user. The man from Nikon really wants me to change to Nikon. Now granted, I just got a 1DSMrkIII (see a few posts back), but this did not deter the man from NPS. Today he gave me a camera to tryout, along with two lenses. Over the next few days, I’ll be trying out a D700 and the new Nikkors - 14-24/2.8 and 24-70/2.8. I’ll write up what I think here.

Tonight is the first test as I’ll be trying out the much vaunted HI-ISO capability the new Nikon manufactured CMOS sensor is capable of....

One day I decided to take a walk along Broadway. I started in Battery Park and ended at the Westchester County Line. All on foot. To really do this right I’ll have to spend a day in each neighborhood, but these first shots are from that day.

I carried two cameras the entire way, an Olympus Pen FT with a 25/2.8 lens mounted and a Sigma DP1.

This shot was taken in Chinatown, right where Broadway meets Canal Street.

One of my favorite shows last September was Vera Wang. I have a sort of “show me what you got and impress me” attitude towards certain designers and Vera Wang is one of them (another notable would be Donna Karan). With this collection, Vera showed me that she could do something other than wedding gowns and do them well. This is some very sophisticated stuff.
